Love and Support for the Krebel Family

Waterloo, IL

Story

The Krebels: Grace and Goodness Those two words come to mind when people speak of Nathan and Molly Krebel. Married in January 2014, Nate and Molly immediately started building their family. By the end of that year, their daughter, Annalee, was born. Smitten, they took on the task of parenting with laughter and determination. At 7-months-old, when they realized Annalee wasn’t reaching typical milestones, testing began, and on her 18-month birthday she was diagnosed with Mowat-Wilson Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that includes being intellectually disabled and non-verbal along with a host of other trials. Molly and Nate were given a 2-3% chance of having another child with Mowat-Wilson Syndrome although it is not an inherited disorder. Feisty Henry was born in 2017 and is as typical and healthy as any 2 ½ year old boy can be. Then, on May 4, 2019, Miss Eleanor Mary entered this world. The excitement in the delivery room was electric! What a shock to discover a few short minutes later that their sweet baby had markers of Down Syndrome. It took six long days to get the official diagnosis. Once again, Molly and Nate dusted themselves off, held their heads high, and embarked on yet a new journey. To say their life is a little crazy is an understatement. Now, in August 2020, Eleanor was diagnosed with leukemia. About 2-3% of children with Down Syndrome (DS) develop leukemia as a child. Eleanor also had a short-lived blood disorder at birth that raised her odds to 10-20%. The doctors monitored her closely, and in March her blood work started looking worrisome. Finally, on August 18, 2020, they saw cells that were newly visible, which warranted an urgent bone marrow biopsy. She has a type of leukemia called AMKL. Each round of treatment for AMKL consists of six chemotherapy treatments over six months - all inpatient. Hopefully, only one six-month treatment is necessary! The bright side to this type of leukemia is that children with Down Syndrome tend to respond fairly well and are given a 90% survival rate! The extra chromosome she has been gifted is a secret weapon! Please help the Krebel family. So many expenses become prevalent with health issues and it is no exception for this endearing family. The Krebel Family embodies grace and goodness. Thank you in advance for any help you can give. You can follow Eleanor’s journey by joining the Facebook group, Eleanor’s Village, or on Instagram @eleanorsvillage.
