Jen's Surgery Recovery

Kirkland, WA

Story

I've been a fitness professional for several years. Unfortunately, in early December, I saw a lump in the mirror and immediately got it checked out, at the end of 2019, I was told it was stage one Breast Cancer. NOT the news I was expecting. This has been a difficult year with having recently gotten divorced and learning to live on a single income in the greater Seattle area. This diagnosis was so unexpected. Things were just starting to look up and settle into a wonderful life. But cancer does not discriminate and, thus, I am moving forward with a mastectomy and sentinel node biopsy on March 11th. The surgery will remove the cancer and eliminate the need for radiation. The biopsy will confirm or eliminate the need for Chemotherapy. The recovery process is long and since my job is so physical, I cannot work for several weeks. If Chemo becomes part of the plan, the ability to work will become difficult for a longer period of time.

Special Notes

The coming months and year will be very challenging as I cannot work for several weeks after the surgery. Some close and wonderful friends have asked me to go online for help and support during this time. Since the diagnosis and the planning for treatment, there has been a lot of tears, laughter, appreciation, gratitude, time with friends, lots of self care, and reflection on how to move forward. I am grateful to have the wonderful support of my friends in the area, my family out of state, and my colleagues at work.
