Helping the Hegfields

Story

Jamie has a special way with words so I will leave some of her recent posts below. You can get caught up on the details and rollercoaster ride she has been on. Jamie has battled kidney disease/failure her whole life. We all know her to be one strong woman and this ongoing battle (emotional and physical) proves her strength yet again! This all took an unexpected turn very quickly - getting the news she was active on the transplant list, then found a match and was moved up to primary recipient! That is a lot to process in less than 24 hours! We are hoping for a smooth surgery today. We have Jamie, family and the family of the donor in our thoughts and our prayers. We will send updates as we receive them. Thank you all for your kindness. April 2 2024 Well….i went from standby to primary recipient fast 😳 we got called at 11:30 pm and were told to head up to Cleveland clinic. Cross matching tests still need done. We should know in a couple of hours if all is well. And if so, surgery is scheduled for 2:15pm. April 2 2024 Was just talking to Doug Hegfield and had a call buzz through. It was CC transplant center calling to tell me that they are putting me on standby for a donor that just popped up. There are SEVERAL people in front of me but we look good on paper. So I’d say I’m guessing it’s probably 30/70 chance, me being the 30. It’s funny the feeling I got. It’s hard to feel joy or excitement when you are told someone is dying. Anyway, it’s a long shot but very interesting to say the least. They have me no food after 11pm just in case (and so they call me and tell me if it wasn’t a go.) Prayers for this human and their loved ones 🙏 Much love ❤️‍🩹 March 21 2024 I found out last week, that my latest fistula surgery was a bust 🫠 unfortunately, both of my arms are no longer useable. I’ve had an av fistula and graft placed in each arm and a catheter surgery on my right, five surgeries total. Due to my age, it is not advantageous to move to my legs just yet. After speaking to both my surgeon and my nephrologist, due to my condition being unpredictable and my surgeries failing, we have decided to move forward with my pd placement surgery, earlier than anticipated and have scheduled it for April 12th. This is the safest route to make sure I’m up and running. Unfortunately, with pd surgery, it is an almost indefinite start of dialysis, even if my progression halts, due to the maintenance of the pd cath and insurance 🙄 so I may be able to hold out just a couple of months after placement. The worry with starting dialysis early is the mental toll it takes. Waiting until you’re extremely symptomatic gives you more of an appreciation for a life altering thing like dialysis, where starting early doesn’t give you as much gratification and can cause you to get down. I was told I needed to remember that when we get there. Good news! I have been approved by the transplant board to go on the list. I’m waiting for insurance to approve the surgery and then I will go active. Life changes ahead! There’s a purpose in it somewhere, I’m sure of it. Challenge accepted!

Special Notes

Everything she eats has to be cooked to 165 internally Her appetite seems pretty regular. Please call or text Doug with any meal questions or to give him a heads up if you are dropping off food! 440-478-9636
