On Saturday, July 18, 2026, Johnnie C. Shumate passed away at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will be cherished by all who knew him. Johnnie was born in Beckley, West Virginia, where he and his twin sister were the first set of twins born at Beckley Hospital. He excelled academically, graduating as salutatorian from Princeton High School. He later earned a degree in Accounting from Concord University and completed his studies at the Department of Revenue School in Louisville, Kentucky. He was also a veteran of the United States Army and was called to serve during the Berlin Crisis. Mr. Shumate dedicated 30 years of service to the Internal Revenue Service before retiring and relocating to Atlanta, Georgia, to be closer to his grandchildren. Following retirement, he purchased TC Bookkeeping and continued preparing taxes and providing bookkeeping services for another 20 years. A man of strong faith, Johnnie was a member of both Beckley Presbyterian Church and Stockbridge Presbyterian Church, faithfully serving as an Elder in each congregation. Johnnie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He treasured time spent with his family and found joy in camping, traveling, golfing, basketball, swimming, playing the piano, singing, and simply being known throughout the neighborhood as “Pa-Paw.” His kindness, wisdom, and gentle spirit touched countless lives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl C. Shumate and Hallie (Trump) Shumate, and by his beloved wife of 63 years, Hallie Widener Shumate. Those left to cherish his memory include his two daughters, Carla Hair and Johnette (Chuck) Smith; five grandchildren, Brittney Brewer, Jeremy (Taylor) Phillips, Jessica Smith, Jamie (Warren) Lott, and Elizabeth (Kevin) Moorer; three great-grandchildren, Alyssa Hope Brewer, Brecken Hal Phillips, and Riley John Moorer; one great-great-grandchild, Hallie Kay Garner; his twin sister, Bonnie Lawrence; many beloved nieces and nephews; and the many adopted grandchildren whose lives he influenced throughout the years. The Shumate family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Southern Grace Hospice and its resolute staff, nurses, and chaplains for the compassionate care, comfort, and support they provided during this challenging time, with special appreciation to Laura, Sarah, and Elizabeth. We also offer sincere thanks to his night sitters—Michelle, Naomie, Natalie, Kisha, Kendria, Tainna, and Dierra—whose kindness, dedication, and good humor helped keep him on track. The family is equally grateful to the caregivers at The Canopy at Westridge for their devoted care, compassion, and unwavering support. A celebration of Johnnie's life service will be Monday, July 27, 2026, at 12:00 noon at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton, WV with Reverend Lance Cooper officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home from 11:00am until the service hour. Johnnie's life was defined by faith, family, service, and generosity. His memory will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him, and he will be deeply missed.
