One Step at a Time with Maggie

LOUISVILLE, KY

Story

What started as an evening of fun plans and adventures with the family, ended with disaster. We were in a car accident on the expressway when a woman brake checked us and we couldn't stop. My family were all safe but I took the brunt of the injuries. I suffered whiplash, concussion, pelvic trauma, sacral displacement, spinal trauma, knee and ankle damage, dislocated hips, torn labrums and more. I have undergone 2 hip surgeries in the last 12 months, with my 3rd next week. I have gone to physical therapy 3 days a week for 18 months to learn to walk again and build strength and balance, but I have chronic pain and muscle fatigue, severe weakness in my back and hips, and despite previously being a ballet dancer, I now need mobility assistance devices to safely maneuver my environment due to reduced coordination. I have used a bedside commode for 18 months and I require a chaperone and lifting assistance for bathing. I can no longer drive or climb steps. I use a walker and a manual wheelchair currently, and we are saving up for an electric wheelchair to grant me more independence when out with my family. We have high hopes this surgery will get me closer to walking unassisted. I created this page to organize support for my 3rd round of surgical recovery to alleviate some of the strain on my family.

Special Notes

Various ways to support include meals or blocks of time to visit with me while my husband is at work and assist me with accessing food during the day to take my pain medications.
