My best friend Leslie is preparing to welcome her adopted baby boy into her family, and while this should be one of the happiest and most exciting times of her life, she is facing an incredibly unfair situation. Leslie was denied maternity leave because she is becoming a mother through adoption rather than physically giving birth to her baby. Let that sink in for a moment. A mother is a mother, whether her child comes into this world through birth or adoption. The love, commitment, responsibility, and emotional connection are no less meaningful simply because she didn’t carry her baby in her body. Adoption is a beautiful act of love. It means opening your heart and home to a child and committing to being there for them through every milestone, every challenge, and every precious moment in between. Leslie deserves the opportunity to experience those first moments with her son, build a strong bond with him, help him adjust to his new home, and establish the foundation of their life together as a family. Just like any other new mother, she needs time to bond with her baby, comfort him, learn his needs, and give him the love and security he deserves. Unfortunately, Leslie will not receive paid maternity leave. Although she will be taking time away from work under FMLA, that time will be unpaid, leaving her without her regular income during a period when she needs to focus on welcoming and caring for her new baby. Instead of being able to enjoy this special season without the added stress of financial uncertainty, she now has to worry about how the bills will be paid and how to manage everyday expenses while taking the time she needs to bond with her son. No mother should have to choose between financial stability and precious bonding time with her child. We are asking for help to ease some of that burden so Leslie can focus on what truly matters: welcoming her sweet baby boy, creating a safe and loving home, and building the beautiful bond that every child deserves with their parent.
