One in a Million: Support Kurt Mather Fight Cancer

At the beginning of July, Kurt unexpectedly was admitted to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. What seemed like a routine procedure followed by a few extra days in the hospital to treat the perforation of his appendix, turned into the shock of a lifetime. Within Kurt’s appendix was a tumor that was sent for biopsy and revealed a one in a million type of cancer: Goblet Cell Adenocarcinoma of the Appendix. Further biopsy showed that the cancer had spread outside the appendix itself and likely spilled into his abdomen when it perforated. Without clear margins from the initial surgery, Kurt is now facing major surgery to remove a portion of his colon where the appendix attached to his intestine, along with a special type of chemotherapy during this lengthy procedure. Under the direction of a specialized team of oncology surgeons and medical oncologists, Kurt is scheduled for a hemicolectomy and HIPEC on August 20th followed by up to 6 months of intravenous chemotherapy. After the initial stay in the hospital, it will take approximately 3 months for Kurt to recover from his surgery while transitioning to an every other week chemotherapy regimen. It is the hope that this radical and invasive treatment will successfully result in a cure for Kurt. During the early phases of treatment, Kurt and Vanessa will need to take off a great deal of time from work and Kurt will be out of work for a significant amount of time for recovery and chemotherapy post surgery.
