Brylee's Cancer Journey

Rome, GA

Story

My 5 year old daughter Brylee Dykes started getting sick in April. With severe pain in stomach, nausea, and fever. After taking her back and forth to ER and doctors 5 times over the course of 5 months. We were sent home and told it was Strep or constipation. On September 19th, I took her again to ER an refused to leave until someone gave me answers what was wrong with my kid. They did a ct scan and found a tumor on her kidney. We were transported by ambulance to CHOA. An hour and half from where we are from. We were told that they suspected it to be Wilms tumor which was cancer but very curable. So she had surgery to remove the left kidney, tumor, and lymph nodes. While waiting for results, they find a spot on her left lung. So another surgery to remove it. The results were that she has diffused anaplastic Wilms tumor stage 4 that has metastasized to lymph nodes and her lung. Its considered "unfavorable" and can resistant to chemo. She just started her first treatment of chemo and will have abdomen and full lung radiation. Thankfully, her insurance covers medical cost. But the frequent visits back and forth an hour and half drive, or paying for lodging close to treatment place is difficult for us. Also, having enough meals while we are here. We are still trying to accept and process the diagnosis, and having to stress and worry about gas, or money to eat on is more than we can handle.

Special Notes

No visitors due to immune system while on chemo. This is a 10 month treatment. We are currently here for treatments now and will be here until 26th. Every week we spend at least 2 days. However, its been more frequent than that. After 26th she will have a week off and then back for a 4 day stay.
