Scarlett's story changed forever on June 29, 2026. At just four months old, our beautiful baby girl aspirated on her formula while she was sleeping. When her Dad went to check on her before going to pick up her brother. He discovered her pale and unresponsive she had vomitted and later on the way to the hospital suffered cardiac arrest. Thanks to the incredible efforts of my husband, first responders, and the medical team at Loma Linda Children's Hospital, Scarlett's heart was restarted, but the lack of oxygen caused a severe hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIE). A few days later, doctors began brain death testing. During the apnea test, something incredible happened. Scarlett took a breath on her own. The test was stopped immediately, and she no longer met the criteria for brain death. From that moment on, she reminded everyone that she is still here and still fighting. Today, Scarlett continues her battle. While doctors have told us she may never walk, talk, or live independently, we believe her story is still being written. Every small victory gives us hope, and we are committed to giving her every opportunity to heal and reach her fullest potential. The reality is that healing a brain injury requires far more than traditional medical care. Insurance covers very little of what children with HIE truly need. We are determined to pursue every therapy that gives Scarlett the best chance at recovery, including intensive rehabilitation, specialized therapies, developmental interventions, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) Insurance does not cover treatments there out of pocket and also housing, travel, meals, fuel, and other living expenses. Like many of the therapies that have shown promise for children with brain injuries, these treatments are not covered by insurance, leaving families to pay entirely out of pocket. Our goal is to give Scarlett access to every opportunity available while her young brain has its greatest capacity to heal. Early intervention is critical, and we don't want finances to determine what is possible for our daughter. Like many families navigating a catastrophic medical diagnosis, our lives have been turned upside down. We have spent weeks living nearly 75 miles from home so we can remain by Scarlett's bedside. During this time, my husband lost his job after exhausting his time away from work to care for our family. Between travel, lodging, meals, vehicle repairs, medical expenses, and caring for our four-year-old son, the financial burden has become overwhelming.
