Saving Treasure’s Chest

W
Story

October has always held a special place in my heart since I have family members who have battled Breast cancer and/or are still battling it. This year it hits a little different though. This year I will be battling my own fight against breast cancer. My story: I just finished an amazing weekend full of hiking and celebration with new and old friends. We literally hiked 19 miles over the two days hiking the Triple crown in Roanoke, VA. It was breathtaking in more ways than one. I get back home knowing I have my annual exam scheduled for Monday 9/21/26. I head into the appointment with no concerns or worries. They usually start the exam with a mammogram however when the tech was asking about self checks and ever feeling anything unusual I mentioned that there was an uneven place under my arm where my bra is. She stopped and said I’d have to see the doctor first. I thought the situation was weird but ok. The doctor said she would do a check and decide if I should go back down for the mammogram or if she would send me for a comprehensive exam. Next thing you know I have the comprehensive exam 9/24, Biopsy 9/25, results 9/29 (triple negative breast cancer), met with the surgeon 10/1, oncology 10/2, genetic counseling next 10/6, and PET scan and bone scan 10/9. Up next Breast MRI 10/13 (my Birthday), port placement and chemo starts 10/21 and echo on 10/22. . Did you just get whiplash because I know I did! I have explained to my daughters Liberty 8 y/o and Jazlyn 6 y/o what to expect over the next few weeks but all they picked up is Mommy will lose her hair 🥺. They check everyday to see if it’s still there and I haven’t started treatment yet 🤣 If you do not do self exams then START! If you feel something unusual even if it doesn’t feel like a lump or mass or whatever you think cancer should feel like speak up.
