Most of you know me as a CNA—I’ve spent my life taking care of others in their most vulnerable moments. Today, I’m the one in the hospital bed at Halifax Health, fighting a battle I never expected. For months, I’ve been struggling with terrifying symptoms: the constant ringing of "whooshing" in my ears, a sensation of being on a "moving ship," and debilitating pain. Recently, things took a turn for the worse. I suffered a syncopal episode (a total blackout fall) and a retinal hemorrhage in my eye. The doctors have diagnosed me with Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), but the root causes are structural: Bilateral Transverse Sinus Stenosis (narrowed veins in my brain) and Cerebellar Tonsillar Ectopia (my brain is sagging into my spinal canal). To make matters even more complicated, the medications meant to save my vision have caused Acute Liver Injury, with my liver enzymes (ALT/AST) spiking to dangerous levels. Because of the falls and the neurological risks, I cannot work. As a CNA, if I can’t be on my feet, I can’t earn a living. The bills are piling up, and the medical expenses for specialized neuro-interventional care are daunting. My son, Jacob Schmitt, has been my absolute hero, stepping up to take care of both me and his father. But he shouldn't have to carry this financial weight alone. Your donations will go directly toward my monthly rent and utilities while I am incapacitated, medical co-pays and specialized treatments not covered by insurance, and transportation and recovery costs as we navigate potential brain surgery or stenting.
