Embracing Emma

W
Story

From Emma’s mom - Honestly, we really just want all the prayers! Emma has epilepsy and at the age of 6 had major brain surgery due to the severity of the seizures and them being resistant to medications. Emma was seizure free for 4 years until they unfortunately returned about 2 yrs ago. They once again became difficult to treat with medications. After multiple test and procedures, her team has decided that a 2 step brain surgery may give her the best chance at getting rid of some of these seizures. Monday(5/8) Emma underwent her first surgery to place stereoEEG electrodes directly into parts of her brain to identify the exact location of the seizure(s). After enough information is gathered they will then determine which procedure they will do to help stop the seizures. They are considering and ablation or possibly and RNS placement. We unexpectedly ran into a few small complications. Emma had a subdural hemorrhage which thankfully was stable and has not required any intervention thus far. This morning we woke up to Emma’s pillow and head wrapped being soaked and they determined she had a cerebral spinal fluid leak, which caused a severe headache. They were able to tighten some of the leads and she has been stable. Now we are waiting until the doctors have enough information to determine the next procedure. They anticipate anywhere from 1-4wks, but as of early this morning they have already captured 16 events so hopefully they can gather enough information in the next few days. Emma is just really tired and has been sleeping most of the time. She is such a brave warrior and I admire her strength and faithfulness.

Special Notes

Right now, the best way to help is to leave a word of encouragement or donate a care card for Rachael and her husband to use during this extended hospital stay.
