Story
On behalf of the Koehler Family: We are heartbroken to share the news that Penelope has been diagnosed with bone cancer in her left knee. It was caught early & she has an excellent prognosis. Claire & Matt are very positive about the doctors, Rush Hospital & the treatment plan. She has had a series of tests, a biopsy, & many different x-rays and as far as they can tell, it has not spread. Claire & Matt did not want the info out until they had the treatment plan solidified which has recently been put in place. Penelope has begun her treatment plan and will be inpatient for 2-3 days for each round of chemo, get 2 weeks off & then more rounds of chemo for about 12 weeks to shrink the tumor in her knee. We are hopeful that she will return to school in the next few weeks. The school district has been very proactive developing a learning plan for her. Around Christmas or the beginning of January, Penelope will have surgery to remove the tumor & probable knee replacement surgery. After healing from surgery, she will have more rounds of chemo. We know that we can count on all of you for your love, prayers & support! As you might expect, we are feeling quite fragile so, at this time, we please ask for no phone calls E-mails & texts are welcome and appreciated.
Special Notes
The Koehler Family appreciates the outpouring of love and support they have received from their friends and family. Many have reached out and asked how they can help support the family during this difficult time. Currently, the most useful assistance would be the purchase of gift cards to use for food deliveries or other items needed to keep Penelope comfortable and occupied while receiving treatment in the hospital. Any gift is appreciated and will directly impact Penelope and her family in a positive way.
