Support for Brady and the Kellar Family

The Kellars are beyond touched by the flood of outreach from friends, family, and the Churchill community! We hope that this page serves as a resource for updates on Brady and ways to support the Kellars while they prioritize Brady's treatment now and recovery down the road. ___________________________________________ Brady was fired up to start his Senior year at Winston Churchill High School and his final year as wide receiver on the Chargers Varsity Football team. Brady is a kind and passionate person with a dream to play football in college. Unfortunately, due to a shoulder injury and a number of serious health complications that ensued, Brady’s senior year is going to take a very different shape than he and his family had pictured for him. Following a partial shoulder dislocation while playing football, Brady and his family were focused on getting assessed and on a physical therapy plan so that he could get back on the field and support his team. During this period of visiting the ER, two orthopedic specialists, and PT for the shoulder injury, Brady spiked a high and consistent fever that concerned his parents enough to take him to the Methodist Emergency Room. Brady was admitted to the hospital on September 1st to explore the source of the fever and an elevated bloodwork result that indicated his heart may also be affected. After extensive testing and several MRI and CT scans, Brady has so far been diagnosed with a staph bone infection in the ball and socket of his shoulder that required a surgical drain and Myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle, that required him to be moves to the Pediatric ICU for closer monitoring and treatment on Saturday September 5th. The inflammation in his shoulder and around his heart seemed to be after he received days of antibiotics through a PICC line at 6 hour intervals and two IVIG infusions. On Tuesday September 8th, he was able to be moved back to the regular pediatrics floor from the ICU and we are all counting this as a huge turning point in his recovery! Brady continues to have a fever that his collaborative team of doctors from general medicine, infectious disease, and cardiology are still trying to get a handle on along with continued monitoring of his Myocarditis and bone infection. Every day has brought both questions and clarity for Brady and his family, and they are taking it in stride, a day at a time. It is unclear when Brady will be discharged from the hospital, but we do know that the impacts of the health issues so far will mean a long road to recovery for Brady including 6 months of restricted activity for his heart recovery, the potential of home health and antibiotic infusions to manage the staph infection, and at least physical therapy, if not surgery, for the original shoulder injury and bone infection. This heartbreakingly means that Brady will not be able to take part in his senior football season and may impact his dream to play in college. The Kellars are prioritizing his health and recovery first and foremost, but are hopeful that he will not be restricted from school and participating in his senior year much longer. Brady is ready to be on the sideline to support his team as soon as he can!
