Supporting Jacob

Erie, CO

Story

Ten years ago, in 2015, Jacob was 13 years old and kept having strange episodes where he was confused and just not himself. We took him to many doctors and tried many things. In 2018, during one bad episode, the dr suggested doing an MRI. We did and a small brain tumor was found. Since then we’ve had neurology, neuro-oncology, psychiatry, gastroenterology and oncology following his case. We’ve gone in for yearly MRIs to watch this tumor slowly grow. Last year during a family vacation, Jacob had a grand mal seizure while swimming in the ocean and nearly drowned. Finally, the neurologist gave a name to Jacob’s episodes saying they were in fact seizures and his subsequent confusion was because of the seizure activity combined with his intellectual delay. They suspect his behavior changes and confusion are related to these tumors. This year, 2025, on Fathers Day, we went in for our routine MRI only to find that the tumor has changed, it now has blood flow which means it has turned to a higher grade tumor. There was also a second tumor spotted in the speech area of his brain. Jacob has hemophilia B which complicates this situation. His blood doesn’t clot well on its own and he receives weekly IV replacement for the protein his blood is missing. After meeting with several different doctors and many blood tests, it was decided to operate and remove the larger tumor completely. It will be done at University of Colorado Hospital on October 3. They will attempt to remove the entire tumor and biopsy the tumor so we know how to treat and prevent more tumors.
