On January 28, our sweet Liam made his entrance into the world much earlier than expected — at 33 weeks and 5 days. During pregnancy, doctors discovered a rare and dangerous condition called vasa previa, where blood vessels run across the birth canal and can rupture during labor. Because of the risk to Liam’s life, Holly was admitted to the hospital early and remained under constant monitoring until an emergency early delivery was the safest option. Liam was born tiny but incredibly strong — immediately beginning his fight in the NICU. Prior to and after birth, imaging revealed and confirmed that Liam has large brain cysts and hydrocephalus, meaning fluid is building up inside his brain and putting pressure on it. Doctors are carefully monitoring him while preparing for the likelihood of brain surgery to relieve that pressure and protect his developing brain. Initially the hope was to wait a few months before his first surgery, but changes in his brain may require intervention in the coming days. Right now, Liam’s days are filled with imagining, specialists, and constant monitoring. Holly and Ke’s days are filled with hospital chairs, alarms, waiting rooms, medical conversations, and decisions no parent ever expects to make. Instead of learning life at home with their newborn, they are learning medical terminology, watching monitors, and praying through every update. The road ahead is uncertain. Liam's condition often requires surgery and ongoing care, and Liam will likely face a long recovery and many follow-up appointments even after leaving the NICU. Through all of this, they are showing unbelievable strength — but the emotional, mental and financial strain of a prolonged NICU stay and complex diagnosis, travel to the hospital, meals, and future medical needs is significant. Even more challenging, the Xu's don't have any local family that can easily jump in to help with running Daniel to school and practice, make trips to the grocery, or stop by to help with meals and laundry. Our hope is that this call for support will help ease some of the stress they are feeling, especially as they face Liam's first brain surgery soon. If you feel led to help, your support will allow them to focus on what matters most right now: being present with Liam, advocating for him, and loving him through every step of this fight. Most of all, we ask for prayers — for healing, for wisdom for his doctors, and for peace for his family as they walk this road one day at a time. Thank you for loving Liam, Holly, Ke, and Daniel with us.
We have updated their wishlist to include gift cards for: - DoorDash for ordering meals at the hospital - Instacart for grocery deliveries - Uber to help transport family visiting to help get to and from the airport without Holly & Ke having to leave the NICU - general donations to help cover other support services and financial burdens.
