Life update (sorry it’s so long but a lot has happened!): Wednesday, November 26th I came home after handbell practice like any normal day, but with the added excitement of Thanksgiving Day on the horizon. I was in my room. Zack was in the den. The next thing I know, I’m hearing people running through my side yard. I think it’s some kids taking a shortcut through my yard. It’s happened before. There used to be some kids that would even stop and play basketball in the back yard! But this was different because the next thing that I heard was Zack screaming! I jumped up and ran out the front door. It was extremely dark and I was yelling for Zack. I could hear him yelling from the back yard and could hear other voices, but not exactly what was said. I continued to yell and run towards the back yard. I screamed “I’m calling 911!” There were more noises. I continued to yell for Zack until I found him face down on my back driveway. I can’t even tell you what the next few minutes looked like. I was trying to find out if he was okay and what happened. He said he couldn’t get up, so then I did call 911 Shortly after that, Officer Zach McCall from the Walhalla Police Department responded and was a complete Godsend. He took control of talking to Zack and finding out what happened and launching the emergency response that we needed. The short story of all the details is that somebody knocked on our door and Zack answered. Two young males asked Zack if they could use his phone to make a call. He stepped out onto the porch and handed his phone to one of them who proceeded to attempt to make a call. He then pulled a gun on Zack and demanded the car keys to my car. Zack told them he didn’t have the car keys and then ran! He ran through the yard with them chasing him which is when I heard him. We believe that they caught him near the top of the driveway and knocked him down. There were leaves and acorns in the driveway, but the extent of his injuries shows that there was more power to the fall than just Zack slipping. His injuries are pretty severe. He fractured both bones in his lower right leg. He basically shattered bones in his right shoulder/upper arm. He is currently in Oconee Memorial Hospital and is tentatively scheduled for shoulder surgery sometime tomorrow. They are going to give his leg some time for the swelling to go down and then he will have a second surgery… probably Wednesday or Friday… on his leg. The police identified 2 suspects who are also wanted in some other crimes and, thankfully, they have been arrested today. We’re still in shock. He’s still terrified, but he was finally able to get some sleep last night. Overall, we’re okay. We consider ourselves lucky that it wasn’t worse and found ourselves spending Thanksgiving reflecting on the things and, most of all, the people who are important to us. Please don’t be offended that I haven’t personally reached out. I made two calls: one to 911 and one to Elise! She and Alicia have handled letting other people know as we’ve had time. Please just keep us in your prayers as we focus on Zack’s health this week. And please be vigilant in your own lives. Keep your eyes open for people that the Sheriff’s Department are looking for. Don’t open your doors to people that you don’t know. Equip your property with cameras and good lighting. And be good friends and neighbors! Much love to you all! Thank you for being a friend!
