Story

On July 16, Amaya was supposed to head out on a dream trip to Paris. Instead, she found herself in the back of an ambulance. BWMC identified a brain bleed and realized Amaya needed more care than they could provide. Back into an ambulance for a fast trip to UMMS. She was in OR immediately upon being transferred from BWMC to University of Maryland Medical Center Shock Trauma. The surgery at that time was to remove 1/2 of her skull to relieve pressure and the bleeding. The next day, she had an angiogram to pinpoint the source of the bleeding. The angiogram revealed an AVM. Unfortunately, Amaya went back to the hospital for pain in her spinal chord due to residual blood leakage while awaiting another surgery to remove the AVM or clip it to stop any future bleeding. On August 6, Amaya underwent surgery. The surgery was supposed to be 8+ hours but after they reviewed her MRI they determined that the surgical team decided to only do 1 of the procedures. The surgeons replaced the part of her skull that they removed. This decision was made because the AVM changed shape, meaning it’s now not a clump as it was before but more elongated. According to the surgeons, that is better because the surgery will be less intrusive to her brain. The downside is the surgery requires a study on her heart first. While the surgical team is confident this is the correct course of treatment, it is not without significant risks. Because of the position she will need to be in for a long surgery there is a risk of stroke. So, the surgical team is proceeding with caution to minimize the risk to Amaya. That's where we are. With the support of her family, Tasha is providing round the clock care to Amaya. This does not leave a lot of time for cooking or grocery shopping. Everyone who knows this family knows this family is there for everyone. Now is our chance to show Tasha that her community supports her as she has done for a countless number of us. Because of the fluidity of the situation, we can best support the family with DoorDash, UberEats, and InstaCart.
