My mom, Marilou Larson, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cirrhosis of the Liver in July of 2023. After a few years of doing her best to follow diet guidelines and periodic paracentesis appointments, the discussion of pursuing a liver transplant became reality. She started the screening process in November of 2025… after a full seven months of numerous jumped hoops, countless blood draws and tests out of the wazoo, she got approved by the board to go on the transplant list and was placed on the list June 24th. In the early morning hours of July 8th, the call came. Surgery took over 8 hours or so, but went fairly well. Afterwards, had some steps backwards with an acute kidney injury, a pesky hematoma resulting in a second surgery a week after, and many blood transfusions. On July 24th, she was moved to inpatient rehab and after two weeks there, was able to come home on August 6th! …and now on to the long, tough recovery journey ahead. Estimates of recovery are 6-12 months, although some side effects and meds will be lifelong. Any assistance, help, encouragement, good vibes, prayers you can share will be profoundly appreciated… now, tomorrow, weeks and even months from now. Thank you!
As of now, no dietary restrictions. No visitors for awhile, as she is immunocompromised and we are working to avoid transplant rejection. She loves Disney, puzzles, flowers, Australian Shepherds, twizzlers/gummy bears, and her favorite color is yellow.
