Support Needed for Angel Mireles — A Brave Young Man Waiting for a Kidney Transplant Angel Mireles is my grandson, and he is truly a miracle. He was born with a form of spina bifida called tethered spinal cord syndrome. Doctors initially told my daughter that he would have a hole in his lower back, would likely never walk or ride a bicycle, and that his life expectancy might only reach his teenage years. But Angel defied all expectations. At just three months old, he underwent surgery on his spine, and since then, he's had numerous visits to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Atlanta. At age three, we were told his kidneys were failing and that he would need to begin using catheters—a difficult reality for any child, let alone a toddler. Yet through it all, Angel remained a joyful, loving little boy. Today, Angel is a kind, thoughtful young man. Unfortunately, his kidneys have completely failed, and he is now on dialysis. His mother has left her job to care for him full-time. Three times a week, she drives him 30 minutes each way to and from dialysis, often waiting with her three other children during his treatments. Their family is in urgent need of support. Monthly medications and the upkeep of their car has become a serious burden—they’ve had two flat tires in just the past month. Angel also needs a special nutrition replacement formula that is essential to his care while on dialysis. Most importantly, Angel needs a kidney transplant.
