Liz’s Surgery Recovery

Tyler, TX

W
Story

Two weeks ago my body tried to kill me. A hernia I’d had for years suddenly started obstructing my small bowel. Which, in case you didn’t know, is not only unimaginably painful, but can be fatal if the small bowel perforates and spreads fecal matter throughout the abdomen. According to my surgeon, I was almost at that point. She had to do a six hour exploratory surgery to make sure my gut wasn’t leaking anywhere, and fix the hernia (which I had just lost enough weight to render possible). I’ve been in either the main hospital or the physical rehabilitation hospital for the past two weeks. I was the star student in PT and OT, so didn’t think it would be that hard to pick up a few things to refresh my refrigerator. I took my grabber, had acquired my temporary handicap tag, and rode in the motorized cart. An hour later I felt like I had been strenuously exercising all day, and barely got the pitiful handful of groceries up before seeking a horizontal position. Good thing some of the things I got are microwavable… So here comes the ask. It’s hard for me, because I much prefer to be the helper instead of the helpee, but I am not going to have the energy to cook for a while, and convenience food is expensive. I need to eat high protein to aid in healing, and even (or perhaps especially) when I go back to work it’s going to be hard to feed myself in a healthy way. Thankfully, I like fish, chicken, and tofu, and if all else fails I can drink ensure. If y’all feel inspired to bring me a casserole or send me Brookshires, Walmart, or DoorDash gift cards I would be so thankful! If you’re not sure if I’d like something you can message me, but there’s not much on the “no” list. My body has decided to reject all lettuce, but spinach is ok 🤪.
