Help Darius Heal

Poplar Grove, IL

W
Story

Darius has been in the hospital for a week now, and doctors expect he will likely be there for at least another week as he continues to recover from serious complications. What started as a routine hernia repair surgery on March 31 quickly turned into something much more difficult. Darius was healing well and nearly back to normal when, on April 11, he suddenly developed severe abdominal pain. After an initial ER visit, doctors believed inflammation in his intestines would resolve on its own—but it didn’t. By Sunday evening, his condition worsened, and he was back in the emergency room, where he was admitted for IV fluids and complete digestive rest. Days passed with no improvement. Then, on Thursday, a surgeon stepped in with a new approach—suspecting something deeper was wrong. During exploratory surgery, they discovered the real issue: Darius’s body was producing excessive scar tissue that had attached to both his intestines and the surgical mesh from his hernia repair. This caused his intestines to become twisted and inflamed. The surgeon carefully removed the scar tissue, untangled the intestines, and created a barrier to prevent it from happening again. Despite that breakthrough, recovery has been slow and painful. Darius is still experiencing severe abdominal bloating, pressure, and inflammation—so much so that parts of his intestines are measuring up to 2 inches wide. He has been unable to eat for days and is now beginning IV nutrition (TPN) just to sustain his body. Once the swelling improves, he will need several more days to slowly transition back to eating. Because of all this, Darius has been out of work since March 31 and won’t be able to return until at least the second week of May. He doesn’t have disability coverage or paid time off, which means over a month without any income. Darius has been the primary financial provider for his family, especially as Shelly recently opened a new small business that is still in its early stages. Their savings have already been used up between the initial surgery and starting the business. On top of that, Shelly has been by Darius’s side at the hospital, balancing long days there while still trying to keep the business running. The added cost of meals—especially with strict gluten-free dietary needs due to celiac—has made this situation even more overwhelming. Right now, they’re facing mounting medical-related expenses, everyday bills, and the financial strain of lost income. If you’re able to help in any way—whether through a donation, sharing this page, or keeping them in your thoughts—it would mean so much. This support will help them stay on top of bills, cover essential expenses, and focus on what matters most right now: Darius’s healing. Thank you for your kindness, support, and generosity.
