Matt's Love Train

Milwaukee, WI

Story

Hey! As many of you reading this already know, Matt is KICKING CANCER'S ASS! Join us in the fight by hopping on Matt's Love Train. Show up however you feel. Whether you cook a meal or cover the cost of one, show up for some house work, help get him to appointments, or provide some comic relief... all the love is welcomed and we are so grateful in advance. We'll post updates on progress and changing needs here. Thank you again for supporting Matt, Kari & their girls on this journey. Matt's Diagnosis & Prognosis A couple months ago, Matt had a cyst on his right eyebrow removed. The expectation, like is true in the majority of cases, was that it was a benign cyst. However, it turned out to be malignant. Testing showed it was a rare cancer- Microcystic Adnexal Carcinoma. Initially, the expectation was that further MOHS surgery could address the issue. However, an MRI revealed that the tumor was quite deep and involved a nerve that controls all sensation to that quadrant of his head. That led to a referral to another head and neck doctor for evaluation. That doctor was reluctant to advise surgery because of the complicated surgery and the long-term consequences of permanently losing all sensation. He consulted with other doctors and the concensus was that there was no alternative to surgery. So, that was the route pursued. It has taken a long time to get the surgery scheduled because two surgeon's schedules needed to be coordinated; the surgeon who will do the actual excision of the tumor and a second plastic surgeon (the same one who did his first surgery)who will do the reconstructive surgery. After 4 to 6 weeks of healing, he will go through 6 weeks of 5 days a week of radiation. He will need appointments during the recovery period to have a protective lens fitted for his eye before the radiation begins to wear during the radiation to prevent damage to his eye. That should protect his sight in that eye. He will have to learn adaptations to rubbing his eye and such moves because there will be no sensation. Doctors have developed a plan focused on a cure but there's a long road ahead. Matt is confident in his care team and knows Froedert & The Medical College is the best care around. We appreciate all good thoughts and prayers for not only Matt but his surgeons Dr. LaPlant and Dr. Zenga, as well as his Radiologist Dr.Awan.
