Bereket’s Stroke Recovery

Portland, OR

Story

To our Village: For those who are not aware, between August 31st and September 5th, Bereket suffered 2 strokes. Of course, this has been an incredibly hard transition for him and everyone who loves him. After 3 different hospitals, tons of love from you all and an incredible in-patient rehabilitation program, we are welcoming Bereket home in early October. His road to recovery will continue with outpatient therapy and lots of support from our village at home. To know Bereket is to endure his sarcasm and 'dad' jokes, which is still intact. :-) He still recognizes his friends and family, loves food, and playing cards, dominos and basketball. What's different? He lost mobility in his left side which has him in a wheelchair for now. He is making small improvements with movement weekly. Cognitively, both sides of his brain were impacted which can be seen currently in his softer/slurred speech, trouble recalling recent/'short' term memory, occasional impulsiveness and overall neuro-fatigue. Your boy is TIRED ya'll. With all of that, we welcome visits (please contact me to arrange), meals, rides, resources and any other supports that comes up. -Erica

Special Notes

It is important that our family stick to a diabetic friendly diet. I've included a link to the Diabetic Plate Method to get an idea of what we're looking for. But please don't stress it. If you stick to a protein and veggies, that should do it! https://fieldreport.caes.uga.edu/publications/C1323-06/diabetes-plate-method/ Yes, Please: Lean protein (fish, turkey, chicken, lean beef, beans, lentils, edamame), non-starchy veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, celery, carrots, kale, bell peppers), avocado and whole grains. Limit: Starchy vegetables (potatoes, corn, peas, squash), sugary sauces and white rice. No, thanks: Fried foods, white bread, sugary snacks or drinks. One kiddo has an almond/cashew allergy, so please avoid those ingredients.
