At only 17 years old, Thea Schroeder had already accomplished something many people spend years working toward: she saved enough money to move out and begin building an independent life. She started working at age 15 and spent the next several years consistently saving, planning, and developing the discipline needed to support herself. Rather than waiting for independence to happen, Thea created a plan and worked toward it one shift, one paycheck, and one goal at a time. While attending the Aveda Institute in Goodyear, Arizona, Thea continued working nearly full time at Olive Garden. Balancing professional cosmetology training with a demanding work schedule required long days, personal sacrifice, and sustained focus. Her commitment allowed her to progress through the program ahead of schedule, with graduation planned for September 2026. Before completing school, Thea had already taken the next major step in her career. She was hired as a salon assistant at Hair of Zona, giving her the opportunity to learn directly from experienced professionals, strengthen her technical skills, understand the business side of the beauty industry, and begin developing her own client network. Thea will graduate from cosmetology school, transition into full-time work at the salon, continue working part time at Olive Garden, and move independently into her first apartment. Her plans extend beyond cosmetology. As part of a long-term strategy to create multiple career and income opportunities, Thea intends to begin the process of earning an Arizona real estate license. She is also beginning to learn the principles of Financial Independence, commonly known as FI or FIRE—Financial Independence, Retire Early. For Thea, financial independence is not about avoiding work. It is about learning how to save intentionally, invest early, minimize unnecessary debt, build multiple sources of income, and create greater freedom and opportunity throughout her life. Her journey is only beginning, but the foundation is already visible: • Started working at age 15 • Saved enough to move toward independence by age 17 • Worked nearly full time while attending cosmetology school • Progressed through the Aveda program ahead of schedule • Secured a salon position before graduation • Preparing to move into her first apartment independently • Planning to continue working two jobs during her career transition • Exploring real estate as an additional professional pathway • Beginning her journey toward long-term financial independence Thea’s story is not defined by a single graduation. It represents years of work, discipline, planning, and the courage to begin building an independent future at a young age. September 2026 marks the beginning of her next chapter—from student to beauty professional, from saving for independence to managing it, and from setting goals to creating a long-term career and financial future.
