At the end of 2025 Matt was diagnosed with an Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor (IMT), a rare form of cancer in his right lung. On February 10, he will undergo a right lower lobe lobectomy at Anschutz in Denver to remove the tumor, followed by a 3–4 day hospital stay and an expected 4–8 week recovery at home in Longmont. The prognosis is overwhelmingly positive for a full recovery and with a very good chance he will be cancer free. Even knowing these potential positive outcomes this season has been heavy, uncertain, and humbling. We have been deeply moved by the love, care, and support our community and family has already shown us. So many people have asked how best to support us during Matt’s surgery and recovery, and we wanted to create a simple resource to help channel that care in ways that are genuinely helpful. Practical support like food, house care, pet support, and gift cards will be especially appreciated. We’ll welcome visitors once we have a better sense of how Matt is feeling. Karen will be working throughout Matt’s surgery and recovery and would love low-key connection—at-home game nights or short outings as Matt’s care and recovery allows. This is a first-time surgery and cancer for our little family so thank you for meeting us where we are at and walking alongside us during this time. We feel incredibly held by our community of friends and family. We love you, thank you for being in our circle.
A few practical dietary notes: Matt cannot eat beef and avoids fried, greasy, or very spicy foods. Karen does not eat dairy (butter, milk, or cheese—dairy on the side is perfect). We generally eat healthy, protein-focused meals. If gift cards feel easiest, we love supporting local favorites like Fuku Sushi, Sakura, Jai Thai, Rosa Cantina, Tiffins, Spitz Mediterranean, 300 Suns, The Den on 11th, and Martini’s Bistro.
