In 2021, I was diagnosed with GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumor) cancer. GIST is rare, found in 1 - 2 % of gastrointestinal cancer. I had surgery to remove it in September 2021. The surgery did NOT have clean margins (all tumor removed). I was didligent in my recovery and routine surveillance every 3 months for the first year and then every 6 months after that showing no evidence of disease (NED). In January 2026, I had a routine endoscopy that showed the return of this same type tumor (GIST) in the same organ (duodenum). I was immediately referred to a pancreatic and liver surgeon. This surgeon was named a 2026 Top Doc by Phoenix Magazine in General Surgery and Surgical Oncology. He specializes in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. The surgery I will have on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 is called a “Whipple Procedure” (pancreaticoduodenectomy) is a major surgery, lasting 5-8 hours, to remove the pancreatic head, duodenum, gallbladder, and bile duct. It involves reattaching the remaining pancreas and digestive organs, requiring several weeks of recovery. I have been overcome by a "Peace that surpasses all understanding" (Philippians 4:7) Which refers to a deep, divine calmness and inner tranquility that remains, regardless of chaotic circumstances or logical human reason. It is a gift from God that acts as a spiritual guard for hearts and minds, providing security when life makes no sense. Which, is ironic since my favorite passage that was my anchor during my previous surgery was "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13) The recovery is 5 - 7 days in the hospital and then 6 weeks total recovery at home.
