Supporting the O'Guins

W
Story

On 5/20, Emily took a nasty fall down the stairs to their garage. She was taken by ambulance to the hospital where they determined that she had broken both the tibia and fibula in the right leg. It is a really nasty break. On 5/21, Emily underwent surgery, which included inserting a rod in her leg. The doctors are saying the recovery period will be around 12 weeks. This is injury is life altering, not only for Emily, but for the entire family. They are going to need help in so many ways. Meals, child care, doctor's visits, physical therapy, summertime entertainment for the kids, help getting Emily up and down stairs when needed, transportation to appointments, as well as grocery pickups and similar errands. I'm sure there are several things I am not thinking of. This is going to take a community of love and support to get them through this. Emily is a full-time mommy to Evie and Liam. School is out for the summer, so there is no school or daycare they are able to go to during the day while Michael works. Emily's mom has been their full-time support system up to this point, but her age and health limits what she is able to do. Michael's parents are out of the country at the moment (and at this point have not even been told about any of this). After they return, Michael and Emily have talked about asking his mom to come up from Alabama for a couple weeks to help out. But just like Emily's mom, his mom and dad also have limitations and health concerns. I (Emily's sister) live out of town and my girls are still in school. Once they are out of school we will be able to go up to help them more, but right now the amount of time I can spend there is limited. As of right now, the doctors are thinking Emily will get to come home tomorrow (5/26). There are so many pieces in motion. Emily and Micheal have been ordering the medical equipment she will need during recovery. Michael and Kathy, her mom, have been preparing a space for her at the house to stay in while she recovers. I am creating a page on this platform, instead of the traditional meal support page, because Emily and Michael are going to need more than just a few meals from their community of loved ones. In this space, they will be able to ask for help, not only with meals (whether homecooked or in the form of a gift card for delivery or take out), but household chores, transportation, home accessibility projects that need to be done for Emily, lawn care, and child care/entertainment. They will also be able to use this space to give everyone updates on Emily's recovery. Thank you for being a part of their community and thank you for loving and supporting them as they get through this challenging time.
