Nancy’s Recovery

South Burlington, VT

Story

On Tuesday morning, September 17th mom woke Amy and I up and asked that we call 911. we were on vacation together in New Orleans, Louisiana when this occurred. Much of the next couple of days were a blur. The first day we were told that she is showing signs of congestive heart failure (CHF) and would need minor procedure to go in and look at her heart function. That procedure was conducted on Wednesday, September 18th with no anesthetic. We learned that she had more complex blockages that were not ideal to stent. after some medical drama with the surgeon at university Medical Center, New Orleans who, despite being requested to include us in conversations, had a negative exchange with Nancy. we did not know all of the conversation but the next morning the Chief of Cardiology came by and told us he does not do company politics, the was not confident in the surgery outcome and he recommended we transfer across town and he would coordinate with a new surgeon. So on Friday September 20th, Nancy was transferred to East Jefferson hospital. we met with the surgeon, Dr. Borgi on Saturday morning and learned that he wanted to postpone the bypass until Wednesday, September 25. Rick flew in on Tuesday evening and we were all here to support mom prior to her surgery and after. During the procedure, they grafted from her left leg and her chest and was told her procedure was successful. She was intubated for at least five days and was extubated for a day or two before we needed to do aflutter ablation as her heart rhythm both in afib and aflutter. Apparently the a flutter was more concerning than a fib and I was either a day seven or eight postop that we had that procedure. As she was re-intubated for that procedure she was a little more agitated coming to. Stay a little longer in ICU due to bad access not her recovery but a few days after being moved down to step down the team discovered an infection in her chest below the skin. She now has an infection, containment protocol, and a series of antibiotics that will have her remain in the hospital to get the infection in hand.
