Supporting Mary and Thom

Hilton Head Island, SC

W
Story

Wow what a crazy past few weeks! On June 17, Thom took a fall off his bike and broke his right hip (subtrochanteric fracture). After surgery inserting a rod and screws into the bone, he spent 12 days at a residential rehab facility, working to rebuild strength and mobility through daily PT and OT. He came home on July 1, and is navigating well with a walker. Then on July 11, Mary fell down the stairs (in the same location right in front of their house, in the photo here!) and broke her right hip! She has a similar surgery (slightly shorter rod and the break was in a slightly different place so it's a intertrochanteric fracture) and started at the same rehab facility on July 13... and got some funny looks from the staff. "You're a very familiar face, but weren't you in the visitor role??" Due to additional hairline fractures, she has a 50% load bearing restriction (In other words, she can't put weight on her right leg). She is working hard to get moving and build strength through the pain. And in between, Tebah (the pup) had an eye surgery. What a month! Though they are still sorting out what this phase will require, they very much appreciate the love coming their way and will post other needs here as they become clearer in the next few weeks. If you have questions about this site or other support, reach out to Mary's daughters Meg (240-353-7200) and Beth (401-451-0522).
