Story
Thank you for your interest in following Lewis' journey and helping the Huber family during this uncertain time. If you want to see updates about Lewis, join the page as a supporter. In the first week of January 2025, Jessica gave birth to a third baby Huber boy, which everyone is pretty excited about. His name is Lewis. UPDATE: [Lewis Scotland Huber was born a few minutes before noon on January 7, 2025. Mom is recovering well, and in all ways except one, Lewis appears to be a perfectly healthy baby. He was 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and 20.8 inches long. Lewis does have two issues with his aorta; a coarctation (narrowing) of the aorta near the arch, and a tightening of the aortic valve.] However, there appear to be some potential complications for Lewis' health, and our family's way of life, that have presented themselves in the last few months of 2024. We have been praying that these health complications, which involve Lewis' heart (more specifically, his aortic valve), are miraculously resolved, to the surprise and delight of all involved. We welcome your prayers for this best possible outcome. However, we are preparing for the possibility that Lewis may have to stay in the hospital for between 1 and 5 weeks, based on doctors' diagnoses and estimated recovery times, depending on which medical intervention(s) Lewis may need. We will not know for sure what doctors recommend until Lewis arrives. Because of these possibilities, Ryan and Jessica are preparing for a range of outcomes, including possible stays in the hospital, frequent visits, multiple procedures, and changing recovery times and release dates for Lewis. This is on top of normal labor and delivery timelines for Jess and baby. All of this will be taking place at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on the West End of Nashville, which is a 20-30 minute car ride from our home on the North side of Nashville, depending on time of day. Ryan's mom, Donna, and sister, Shannon, are preparing to head up support efforts once Ryan, Jessica, and Lewis are (potentially) living much of their lives at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. Donna and Shannon will be ensuring that Max and Theo are cared for and get where they need to go (school, hospital, etc.), for the most part. Many others have volunteered to support this effort, and we are grateful for that. All of this means that multiple people, especially Jessica (but also Ryan and Shannon), will be unable to keep a regular schedule, run their businesses full-time, or prepare meals in a regular fashion. Everyone will be taking on a bit more than usual, in other words. There will most likely be more driving, less working, and less earning, for example. What does this mean? Well, it means that any help you may feel moved to offer would be gratefully received. Meals at the hospital, meals at home, gift cards, gas cards, Venmos, or whatever. On any given evening, Donna, Shannon, the two older boys, and either Ryan, or Jess, or both, may be at home, or some combination of them may be at the hospital to be with Lewis. Again, Donna and Shannon will be coordinating care for the older boys, and Ryan and Jess will be back and forth in some pattern, but we don't know for how long until Lewis is born and the doctors are able to perform some tests on him. One of our main sources of support in life is our Nashville community, centered around Church of the City Downtown, including pastors, friends, and others who care for us and have already volunteered to help in any way they can. Ryan will be communicating needs, not only through this page, but through the pastors and staff of COTC, especially friend of the family Pastor Doug Rominger. Hopefully, those needs are few and not for a lengthy time, but we don't know for sure. Ultimately, we hope to look back at all of this as over-preparation for a joyous and relatively problem-free time of welcoming Lewis into the world. We are grateful, though, that we have an amazing community of support in case things are harder or more complicated than we would like them to be in January and in 2025. God has already answered many prayers and shown up for us in a number of ways, mostly through people who have supported us and given sacrificially of their prayers, time, and resources, and have pledged to continue to do so. Thank you in advance for showing up for us in whatever way you feel moved to do so. In the other sections of this page, we will try to communicate as clearly as we can what acts of kindness we anticipate will be most helpful as we navigate this season of hope, challenge, and the unknown. This is also the page where we will post updates and prayer requests about Lewis' health. God bless you. - The Hubers
Special Notes
We have no food allergies or restrictions. You can sign up for bringing a meal below for dinner to the family at the Huber's house or a meal to Ryan and/or Jessica in the hospital. In addition to the links listed here for donations and gift cards, other gift cards that would be helpful are Costco and Publix. If you want to order food instead of making a meal, here is a document that contains the typical orders from the Huber's favorite restaurants and/or Ryan and Jess as individuals when they're at the hospital. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xlEgjFUfRLKWc0OFGbf6kjf69fk1_IUE32dCoipkGkE/edit?usp=sharing
