Meal train for Ashley and Sergio during extended NICU stay

Omaha, NE

Story

Hello - this meal train is set up to support Ashley, Sergio, and Elián as they focus their attention on their family’s newest addition, Aleida, who arrived prematurely at 26 weeks. Ashley endured a grueling few weeks prior to Aleida’s delivery, starting when the doctors identified a spinal malformation during the anatomy scan. Following an amniocentesis and diagnosis of spina bifida, Sergio and Ashley made the long drive from Omaha to Cleveland, where one of the few specialists in the country were to perform surgery on Aleida’s spine in utero. After meeting with several of the specialists working on Ashley’s case, it was determined that the surgery was too risky. At the same time, Ashley’s blood pressure began to increase and by the time she made it back to Omaha, she had developed severe preeclampsia and went directly to the hospital. Ashley was immediately placed on a magnesium drip to prevent the most serious outcomes for her, with hope that her condition would stabilize in order to maintain the pregnancy. However, her liver and kidney enzymes continued to increase, putting both of their lives at risk. The doctors needed to deliver Aleida at the gestational age of 26 weeks, weighing 1.5 lbs. Their little warrior was strong enough to undergo her first surgery and continues her early days in the NICU with ultra-specialized care. As with babies born at her age and size, Aleida has faced many challenges already and will require top support in the hospital as she grows and develops. Ashley is recovering from the complications of preeclampsia and her c-section as Sergio holds down the fort. Now, they are challenged to find the balance of NICU life, caring for Elián, and work. Let’s help nourish and support these wonderful people through this difficult and unpredictable time.
