Story
My dad is finally coming home. He still has a long road to recovery and could use additional support from family, friends, and his extended network. I'd like to personally thank everyone who's contributed time, donated money or purchased a t-shirt, or sent a supportive message, or made a phone call. As he returns home, life is a little different. He'll be in a wheelchair and his family will adapt. I know everyone has a variety of things they donate to, this Meal Train is to support his transition home and offers different ways to contribute for those able. Thank you, all, for the love and support. - ECC -- He's been through quite the journey this year. In January, you wouldn't have known what would happen next. He was himself and everything seemed fine but then he started to feel ill one, early February weekend. After a stumble that didn't seem right, Jill called the paramedics who took him to the emergency room. Fortunately, he was under the care of the ER team as his condition began to spiral. He went into diabetic ketoacidosis, and Strep A began to spread throughout his body causing him to go into septic shock. As my dad was transferred to the ICU, he went into cardiac arrest and suffered an anoxic brain injury from lack of oxygen to his brain. The ICU team worked quick to stabilize him and battled additional complications as they would arise over the long month he was there. It would be difficult to say we didn't have doubts during that month but the strength and support of the Mercy ICU team and our family and friends kept us going... and we kept my dad going with positive messages and love. He was able to move to a neuro rehabilitation center in Iowa, where he's been for the last three months working to regain speech and motor skills. While unsure the length of the recovery ahead, we just take it one step at a time, one day at a time.
