Gabby and I were in a severe car accident just south of Coos Bay on February 17, 2026 on our way home from a fertility appointment. I was driving, Gabby was the passenger, and our two dogs were in the backseat. Gabby and I were both knocked unconscious, and the vehicle was totaled. We were both rushed to the local hospital in Coos Bay. I was released from Coos Bay that night while Gabby was transferred to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center RiverBend in Springfield, Oregon due to the severity of her injuries. My brother picked me up from Coos Bay and drove me to the hospital in Springfield to be with Gabby. Upon arrival to Springfield, I learned the extent of Gabby’s injuries. Gabby had separated her skull from her spine, had bleeding throughout her body, including bleeding in her brain and around her spinal cord, fractures in her lower back, and a broken arm. She was on a ventilator, had pneumonia, her entire body was swollen, and she had bruises covering her legs. She was admitted to the Neuro ICU where she would remain for three weeks. The neurosurgeon who performed Gabby’s surgery on her neck said that it was unbelievable to be operating on Gabby. She informed me that the injury was the worst she has ever seen in her years of being a neurosurgeon and stated that this type of surgery isn’t performed because people with this injury typically die instantly. During Gabby’s time in the ICU following her neck surgery, she had surgery on her left arm to repair her humerus, an emergent tracheotomy followed by a tracheotomy surgery and the insertion of a feeding tube in her stomach. On 3/7 she was moved from the NTICU to the Cardiac Surgery Recovery Unit. On 3/10 we were transported by medical flight from the hospital in Springfield, Oregon, to Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colorado. Craig is a specialized rehabilitation hospital focused on brain and spinal cord injuries. Gabby was categorized as being a combo patient due to having a traumatic brain injury and a spinal cord injury. On 5/14 we transitioned from acute care at Craig Hospital to post acute care at On With Life in Ankeny, Iowa. On 7/4 we flew back to Colorado for Gabby to start outpatient services at Craig Hospital. I have started this page to assist me in being able to provide updates to anyone and everyone wishing to follow along on our journey. Thank you for your continued love, support, and prayers. *UPDATE* As of 7/5, Gabby is at Craig hospital for the Outpatient program. Update- Gabby will be discharged from On With Life on June 12th.
