On Saturday, Alicia and her boyfriend, Dan, were in a serious four-wheeler accident that completely changed their world. Dan had to be rushed to the hospital and was later airlifted to Barnes Jewish Hospital, where he underwent major surgery. His spine had separated from his pelvis - breaking his sacrum - and doctors had to reconstruct the nerve endings and reattach them to his sacrum. It's a rare and incredibly painful injury, and his recovery will be long and challenging. Dan is the main provider for their blended family. Together they're raising four beautiful kids — their almost one year baby girl, my sister's two sons from a previous relationship, and Dan's daughter. My sister has been staying home to care for their youngest, and now she's by Dan's side, helping him through this difficult time. With Dan out of work for the foreseeable future, they're facing mounting expenses — medical bills, travel costs to and from the hospital, and everyday needs for their kids.
