On June 20th, I found a suspicious area during a self-examination and have been diagnosed with Invasive Lobular breast cancer. Through the diagnosis, we've determined that the tumors are multi-centric, which means they are throughout the breast. Unfortunately, this means I'm not a candidate for a lumpectomy. It is recommended that I undergo a double mastectomy, which is scheduled for July 25th at Froedtert in Milwaukee. I already got a second opinion. During the first week of diagnosis, I also came down with shingles as a stress response to boot. It's been a difficult time, and yet we are grateful for many things. It was found early. We're confident in the care plan. It is summer, and I can get the treatment I need and hopefully be ready to teach third grade in the fall. We've had so many friends, family, and neighbors reach out and ask what they can do to help. This site was recommended as a useful platform to help with organization and keep people informed. Updates: 8/12 Double mastectomy complete. Recovery is a little rocky. I've had some significant pain and a possible drain infection. We are working with the team to make the best choices for me moving forward. Unfortunately, 1 of the lymph nodes that was taken out during the mastectomy was cancerous. So that changes things. My case is being brought before the Froedtert board on Monday but it looks like chemotherapy and or radiation are going to be part of my treatment plan. As of right now, surgery number 2 placing the spacers is still scheduled for Friday August 15th. Good news, all the cancer was removed from my breasts. Margins were clear. Updates: 10/24 I'm half way through my first round of chemotherapy. Taxol for 12 weeks and AC for 14 weeks. This.is.tough. but I.am.tougher.
We love company but please keep your distance if you have any cold symptoms. Immunity is a big concern. We'd love help with nutrient-rich foods to help with healing. The family has no known food allergies. Our younger eaters might enjoy "plain" versions of complicated recipes. We'd appreciate cookies, bars, breads, or fruit trays. Unfortunately, Mom is now having a hard time with food and food smells.
