Fresh Start Dignity and Outreach Program

For the past five weeks, I have partnered with a nonprofit organization in our community called Hands for the Homeless, Inc. When I was first asked if I would be willing to provide haircuts for people experiencing homelessness, I was told they might arrive hot, sweaty, and dirty. But something in my heart told me that I needed to do this—not because they needed my help, but because I needed theirs. This has become one of the most humbling and rewarding things I have done in a very long time. Every Thursday, I spend two hours cutting hair. While there, individuals can receive a hot meal, pick out clothing, and get a fresh haircut. However, there is still one important need I would love to help provide: personal hygiene kits. Although I am a licensed cosmetologist, finding companies willing to donate supplies has been difficult. Many companies explain that their donations are given to larger organizations, which then distribute the products. But I have learned that even the smallest contribution can make a tremendous difference. When someone sits in my chair for a haircut, I would love to send them away with more than a fresh look. I want to give them a care package containing necessities such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, wipes, sunscreen, a razor, a comb, clean socks, and feminine hygiene products. My goal is to create three different types of kits: one for women, one for men, and one for individuals with sensitive skin. If you feel led to help, any donation would be deeply appreciated.
