If you know Lyanna, you know that becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) has long been one of her goals. Since having her own children, she has been giving lactation advice and support to her community, which eventually led her to earn her Certified Lactation Specialist certification in October 2020. While she loves doula work, lactation support has always been her deepest passion; and in Grand Rapids, MI, Black lactation professionals are few and far between. Starting August 2026, Lyanna will begin the 8th cohort of the Henry Ford College Lactation Consultant Program; a huge step toward a goal she's held for almost a decade. This will be a big shift for Lyanna and her family. Between travel expenses, school expenses, and everyday bills, the transition won't be easy, especially since she has relied solely on her doula work to support her family and will need to take on fewer clients while she's in the program.
