A tumor was recently discovered in Axton’s brain after an ER visit, and from that moment, life changed for him and his family. Last week, doctors found the tumor was pressing on important parts of his brain and tangled with delicate nerves. Due to its seriousness, he needed surgery immediately. The surgeons removed all visible tumor, protected his cranial nerves, and completed the operation without problems. After surgery, Axton faced a tough recovery with swallowing challenges and a feeding tube. He continues to show strength. He is now getting out of bed with little help, standing for up to 10 minutes, sitting up longer, and working hard through physical and occupational therapy—even completing a dinosaur scavenger hunt and obstacle course. His speech therapist has seen encouraging progress. He is working through swallowing challenges and has graduated to enjoying Cheez-Its and Sun Chips while continuing a purée diet and working toward eating more normally. The family recently learned the tumor is an aggressive, cancerous type. While heartbreaking, this does not change the immediate plan. Axton will have a spinal tap soon to help doctors better understand the tumor and customize his treatment. He will also begin inpatient rehabilitation at Scottish Rite tentatively mid-week next week and continue toward radiation treatment as planned. Through the hardest storm their family has ever faced, Axton is surrounded by a loving family—especially his devoted big sister, Ava—and an incredible community lifting him in prayer, hope, and support.
