Laura Smith's Cancer Journey

Bradenton, FL

W
Story

In November 2022, I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, a diagnosis that was a complete surprise as I am a nonsmoker and had no symptoms or pain. Radiation and targeted therapy medication reduced my peach-sized tumor to the size of a peanut, eventually leaving only debris. The tumors in my vertebrae and rib were also treated successfully, and I have remained stable for over a year. I undergo a PET scan every three months to verify the ongoing effectiveness of my treatment. My medication, Tagrisso, inhibits the growth of cancer cells, and I was to remain on it until side effects became intolerable or my body became resistant, rendering it ineffective. I was fortunate to benefit from it for 22 months. However, at my last appointment, several new tumors were detected. The next steps include a biopsy and radiation. After the biopsy results, my oncologist will devise a new treatment plan, which may include additional medication, chemotherapy, and radiation. Thankfully, the cancer has not spread to my brain. I have full confidence in my oncology team at Moffitt, one of the top cancer hospitals. My husband's unexpected passing in December 2020 has left me to face this battle while living alone. However, my faith is much stronger than any cancer, and my support team is incredible; I am blessed with the very best daughter, friends and neighbors. Since Moffitt is about an hour's drive away, and I'm uncertain about the treatment I'll need, I've set up this site. It allows me to consolidate my appointments and needs, enabling people to offer help by signing up for tasks they're willing to assist with, such as rides or dog-walking. This page will also serve as a means of communicating health updates in one place. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me. Your prayers, the rides to my appointments, the walks for Benjamin, etc. have all made a significant impact. It's always been hard for me to ask for help, your generosity has been overwhelmingly appreciated. I will continue to face each day with gratitude, laughter, joy and a great sense of peacefulness.
