Early Saturday morning, October 14th, Rick was in a car accident. He was T-boned and ejected from his truck. If we haven’t reached out to you personally, please know we wanted to, and tried, but Rick’s phone was lost in the crash. Here are the medical details so far - Rick has a C4-C5 fracture, with spinal cord involvement, a fractured pelvis, a fractured ulnar bone and dislocated elbow. Those are the biggest issues. Surgery on the spine was successful in as much as they were able to stabilize the neck. However, he is paralyzed from the shoulders down. No more surgery is currently scheduled due to his medical instability and he is currently experiencing an intractable fever from a yet to be identified infection. They do not believe he will recover any of his functionality. He is intubated and in the M-ICU. This is obviously devastating. For Rick. For Miller. For me. We have been so overwhelmed by, and are so grateful for, the outpouring of love, support and prayers that we have received. We could not ask for better family and friends. We ask that you continue to pray for our family. I will try to keep this updated, but feel free to reach out to me. I am happy to provide my phone number to you. ~ India 10.20.2023 - Update - Rick’s condition has deteriorated. He currently has septic pneumonia and is completely unresponsive. We will be calling in Hospice, but they are not sure that the process will take very long once he is extubated, and most likely will not need those services. If you would like to come see Rick, please come today (Saturday) by 3pm, contact me and I will let you know where we are. 10.22.23 To our family and friends - Rick passed away peacefully this Sunday morning at 3:27 am. We firmly believe that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, and I know the first thing Rick heard was “Well done”. We were surrounded and supported by family and friends, and Miller and I are honored and overwhelmed by the love that was shown to us and all of the people that came to the hospital this past week to be with us. We cannot thank you enough.
India and Miller are extremely grateful for all of your love and support. If you would like to send a meal, gift cards are greatly appreciated at this time. With love, Leigh Polster (India’s aunt)
