The Sunlit Way: Lighting the Path to Empowered Living for Individuals Diagnosed with Developmental Disabilities Founded in 1978, Sunnyhill is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been transforming lives and empowering communities. What began with 18 families seeking a camp experience for their children with disabilities has grown into one of the largest providers of services for individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities (DD) in Jefferson County, St. Charles County, and the Greater St. Louis Metro area. Sunnyhill’s founding vision was brought to life by Monsignor Behrmann, who provided access to purchase the Sunnyhill Adventures property, a legacy that continues to be a cornerstone for our community today. Guided by our founders’ vision, and under the leadership of our Executive Leadership Team, Directors of Support Services, and Board of Directors, Sunnyhill now provide over One Million hours of person-centered support each year through a team of more than 400 dedicated staff members. Our services reach individuals diagnosed with a range of developmental disabilities, including autism, Downs syndrome, ADHD, and cerebral palsy. Rooted in the Greater St. Louis and Jefferson County region, Sunnyhill reinvests 97% of every dollar raised back into the community. Since our founding, we have empowered individuals to overcome societal barriers, achieve independence, and light the path to empowered living with dignity. The need for quality-of-life support services is more urgent than ever. Many individuals face critical challenges, including gaps in Medicaid funding, unstable housing, limited access to specialized healthcare, and a lack of inclusive recreational spaces. These barriers prevent individuals from fully participating in society and accessing the resources they need to thrive. Addressing these issues is essential to creating an equitable, inclusive environment where everyone can live with dignity, independence, and purpose.
