Roxanne Evans, my sister who was recently diagnosed with DFSP, or dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, a very rare form of skin cancer. Only about 1,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with DFSP each year. Roxanne is scheduled to undergo Mohs Micrographic Surgery on October 15, and the procedure may continue through October 16. During surgery, thin layers will be removed and examined one at a time until no cancer cells remain. After the pathology reports are back, Roxanne will also need reconstructive surgery. What was first expected to be a smaller procedure has now become a much more extensive surgery and recovery than anyone anticipated. As a self-employed hair stylist and single mom, Roxanne depends on being able to work to provide for her family and keep up with everyday expenses. Time away from the salon means lost income at a time when she is also facing added costs related to having surgery in Omaha. This fundraiser will help supplement Roxanne’s lost income while she is unable to work and help with those surgery-related expenses. Roxanne is the kind of person who always shows up for others as an amazing mom, sister, friend, and stylist, and she rarely asks for help herself.
