The Support Circle for Joel Beckham

W
Story

Many of you know and love Joel as a devoted husband, father, friend, surfer, musician, and one of the most upbeat people you’ll ever meet. Whether he’s catching waves, sharing a laugh, lending a hand, or playing bass on the worship team at Refuge, he has a way of bringing energy, encouragement, and joy wherever he goes. On Monday, June 1, Joel was involved in a surfing accident at Bolsa Chica State Beach that resulted in a serious neck injury. He was taken to the hospital and is currently receiving care in the ICU. Doctors have shared some encouraging news: an MRI confirmed that there was no damage to his spinal cord. However, swelling around the injury has affected his ability to move his body at this time. Early on the morning of June 2, he underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his spinal cord, and his medical team continues to monitor his progress closely. While there are still many unknowns, we are grateful for the positive signs we have seen so far and remain hopeful as Joel begins the road to recovery. We know that anyone who has spent time with him understands that determination, resilience, and a great sense of humor are part of who he is. This page has been created to support Sue, Josh, and Emma as they spend long days at the hospital and navigate the weeks ahead. Many have asked how they can help. At this time, we are simply asking for DoorDash gift card donations to help provide meals for the family while they remain at the hospital supporting Joel. Thank you for caring for them in such a practical and meaningful way during this season. As needs change, we will continue to update this page with ways to help. Most of all, we invite you to keep Joel and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you for surrounding them with love, encouragement, and support during this time. The outpouring of care from family, friends, the surfing community, and the Refuge family has already been a tremendous source of strength and encouragement. We look forward to sharing updates and rejoicing for every step forward together.
