My name is Katherine, and I’m 39 years old. I’m a mom to five amazing kids, ages 10 to 19. Between middle school, high school, and college, they keep me busy and motivated every single day. They are my reason to keep fighting. I was officially diagnosed with breast cancer last November, but I had already been sick for over a year before that. Because of this, I’ve been out of work for more than a year, which has made an already difficult journey even harder financially. Over the past year, I’ve gone through chemotherapy and radiation, which took a huge toll on my body and our family’s finances. with the lack of effectiveness and being stage 3, it’s time to take the BIG step. My next step is a double mastectomy with reconstruction. This surgery is my best chance at beating cancer for good and being here for my children as they grow into adulthood. Chemo and radiation just aren’t a great option for my body, and I can’t keep paying so much for something that isn’t working well enough. Unfortunately, the financial burden is overwhelming. Between medical bills, recovery time, and the everyday costs of raising five kids, I can’t do this alone.
