There is a two-tiered system of labor laws that exists in Taiwan: “one set of rules for westerners such as myself, and a decidedly lesser set for Southeast Asians who come to work in factories, on fishing boats, and in private homes as caregivers.” - Joe Henley, Migrante. Most of us have the privilege to be in the former. Our friend, “Jelly,” however, is not. She is a current employee of ours; to be perfectly transparent, we each employ Jelly as our housecleaner - which exemplifies our privilege and her struggles. Jelly is the hardest working woman we have ever met. She is a single mother who has spent the past 15 years working tirelessly overseas to support her son, whom she had to leave at 18 months old, her mother, and sometimes even her 5 brothers in the Philippines. After working 6 to 7 days a week and saving for those 15 long years away from her family in Dubai and then Taiwan, this Christmas, she was preparing to return to the Philippines for good. But the day before she was to send most of her savings back home in preparation for the move, she was ROBBED in the shared dormitory she lives in, and nearly everything she saved was gone. Although she filed a police report, and has a pretty sound idea of who did it, the Taiwanese police won't press charges as “there isn’t enough evidence.” The Philippine Embassy also warned her not to pursue the case further; as you’ll learn from the book Migrante, Southeast Asian workers in Taiwan are constantly told to “take what we give you, be grateful, and above all, be silent.” Her spirit was utterly broken. The only thing we feel we can do is support Jelly financially. That’s why we’ve started this page to at least help expedite her journey back home to the Philippines. If you have the ability to support our friend, please do so and share this page! Thank you all for your support!
