Hello friends, fam, and folks! The rumors are true: My uterus is being evicted. On Tuesday, 2/21, I’m having a total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy, and it’s gonna be a journey. My doctors and I hope the surgery will eliminate some tough symptoms I’m experiencing, mitigate risk of some future issues, and cancel my subscription to regular reminders of past traumatic things! Most hysterectomies are done outpatient, with an estimated 6-week healing time. My disabilities and medical complexities mean my timeline is a little bit different: I will be in the hospital for at least one night, and the anticipated timeline for me to be close to my baseline is about 12 weeks. There’s always the chance it will be easier than we anticipate, or I could face additional complications. I have had rough recoveries from all previous surgeries, and while we’re very much hoping this time is different, it’s best to stay ready. The first couple weeks of my recovery will likely be the hardest. If y’all are able to drop off meals, share friendship-time (via COVID-cautious visits/phone calls/Zooms), take the three pups for walks or backyard romps, and/or help us stay on top of things around the house, Christine and I would be so grateful. As many of you know, this surgery is stirring up some old painful stuff. All the reminders that I’m not alone, offers to hold space with me, and encouragement to make this meal train/let my people show up? Those things mean the world. Thank you for your love to carry me through this! I am constantly awed by my community.
