Our community gardens provide food for our community pantry and neighbors in need, as well as meeting places and educational spaces. During summer our gardens get very dry--climate chaos had reduced rainfall but left it hot. To keep the plants alive we need to water them. Yes, in New Orleans September and October are still summer. The Food Forest provides vegetables like okra and eggplant. The Rain Garden helps retain water and keep the block from flooding. The Pantry Garden provides herbs and vegetables.
Seeing plants grow from seed to food is magic! They take carbon dioxide from the air and powered only by light convert it into bright and beautiful vegetables and fruits that nourish us, and make oxygen that we need to breathe at the same time. Then the plants die and decomposers turn them into nutrients for next year's generation of plants.
