Story
Along with Spina Bifida, Bennett also has severe Scoliosis (curvature of his spine). His first surgery for his Scoliosis was in October. Screws and anchors were placed into the top of his spine. They have healed and his body is ready for phase two of the MAGEC Rod surgery. Surgery is scheduled for March 13th in Miami (2 hours from home). This surgery will be more intense and invasive as he will have screws and anchors placed at the bottom of his spine and the magnetic rods will be threaded up to the top of his spine and will be "locked" into the existing anchors that were already placed. The hospital stay is longer (up to one week) and recovery time is longer (3-5 weeks) depending on how quickly his body heals. He has an additional risk with his Spina Bifida so his neurosurgeon will also be present during the surgery but we are praying she isn't needed. She is there in case of leaking spinal fluid or anything nerve related. We ask specifically for prayers, positive thoughts and healing vibes as he faces another major surgery and for his team of doctors to have the wisdom and knowledge for this surgery to be successful. He is the bravest boy we know and we are hoping and praying for no complications and a speedy recovery. Once he heals, every 2-3 months, he will have the rods adjusted via magnets on the outside of his back to incite growth. We are hoping for the max amount of growth possible for him so his back straightens and his organs are no longer being squeezed. It is a lot of traveling back and forth to Miami, him (unfortunately) missing school (his happy place) and being away from Lynlee, his friends and his beloved PoPo and Grammy. He is terrified of needles, especially IVs, so prayers and well wishes for him to remain calm and for his pain to be managed are appreciated. If anyone would like to send a card, happy mail, or anything to brighten his time in the hospital and during his recovery, we know it would bring a smile to his face. If you feel called, any contribution from his wishlist to help during his recovery or to us to help alleviate the financial burden is greatly appreciated. We thank you in advance for your generosity and for supporting Bennett and our family during this difficult and challenging time. We need strength and encouragement to keep going.
