Helping Dan recover

nwotnoiNUNU, PA

Story

After a same day surgery Dan was rushed back to the OR with internal bleeding and his body just simply shut down! He was clinically deceased but they brought him back. He was intubated in a medically induced coma for 13 days. Once extubated, he aspirated on a tooth that was knocked out by the vent and clinically dead again. Reintubated but this time Braun activity came into question. Feeding tubes, NG tubes, huge incidents thst were very slow to heal and his liver and kidneys temporarily shut down. Thankfully he was ok but still remained in the ICU for an additional time totalling 29 days where he suffered with ICU delirium. He was sent to a med-surg floor for nearly 2 weeks where Hospital Psychosis set in making relearning how to eat, move his extremities and recognize his own family a lot more difficult. He couldn't even lift a spoon to his mouth. He did gain some strength and could stand for up to 3 mins with max assist and did learn to feed himself again. The next phase was inpatient rehab for 27 days! He learned to walk, slightly lift his feet from the ground and do minimal self care. The use of a wheelchair and walker being his ways of mobility. After a total of 72 days he went home via ambulance as getting into a vehicle wasn't possible. Home 10 days and readmitted for another week with sepsis. He went home again for 11 days and another readmission for sepsis. This time he was discharge on a 30 day IV antibiotic that his wife was trained on the fly to manage. At day 122 he's finally able to manage getting into a vehicle but it's tough. He's still unable to do stairs so is confined to the 1st floor with a hospital bed, still doing therapy at home and visiting nurses. After 85 days of the family traveling 3 hours round trip daily, copays for 5 ambulance rides, equipment and wound care supplies, co-pays and co-insuranices, they are struggling financially. His wife had to stop working to be his full time caregiver. His wounds have improved but she has to dress them 2x daily, he's still nearly full assist on daily, basic activities and she has to monitor and manage his IV antibiotics daily. If anyone would be willing to help with gift cards to Walmart or instacart or even cash donations to cashapp or venmo to help with ongoing copays and travel expenses for follow up visits, it would help so much. They have applied for state Medicaid but make just a little too much monthly to qualify. Thanks for reading !!
